How To Use IES Light In V-Ray For Revit

This video is created by Chaos Group that shows how to apply lights (IES lights) in V-ray for Revit.

IES light type is applied to load and render naturalistic light distribution profile files (IES files). The icon is available in the V-Ray main toolbar.

V-Ray for Revit is compatible with IES lights in the project. If the IES light files are untraceable in any of the search paths in v-ray, it applies a generic IES file that lusters light uniformly in all directions.

An IES file refers to a text file that defines the depth of a light source at points on a spherical grid. It offers more photorealistic lighting effects in rendered images as compared to other types of light distribution.

V-Ray for Revit facilitates to enable and disable light groups in the Revit. Light groups are obtained by selecting the Rendering Settings in the view properties of the view to be rendered, and clicking on the ‘Artificial Lights’ button. This button is activated if the lighting scheme is arranged to a mode with artificial lights allowed.

Steps associated with MEP Coordination Systems

MEP coordination is considered as one of the most vital process in construction that should be given special attention. The system makes sure that the structural framework and architectural design are not conflicted with its MEP-FP systems. Based on the level of details (LOD) and need of the client, the MEP coordination method differs in every organization. MEP Coordination Systems contains the following stages :-

1. Assessment of Consultant Design Drawings and Structural/Architectural Plans: Preliminary, the MEP coordination service facilitates the organization to obtain single line drawings from the MEP-contractors or consultants. Afterward, they study the structural and architectural plans thoroughly. Besides, they study the MEP specifications except for the assessment of drawings, layouts with reliability. Finally, MEP coordination services provider designs a brief plan for coordination.

2. 3D Prototype Formation: To fulfill the need in initial phase, the MEP coordinator generates an accurate 3D model by applying AutoCAD or Revit. This 3D model demonstrates total MEP services with adherence to the architectural and structural conditions of the building. Besides, this entire model acts as the base for various other important development-related plans, elevations or sections. MEP coordinator employs the 3D model for client inputs as well as generating complete walkthroughs.

3. Conflict detection and Resolution: In this phase, the 3D model set up earlier is tested for clashes among the MEP systems and the design elements. For this, they use Navisworks, a particular clash-detection software application. It detects all types of clashes like workflow clashes, geometry-related hard clashes, and clearance clashes. Besides, the MEP coordinator detects possible alternatives and deliver them to the clients.

4. Formation of Coordinated Sections and Drawings: Once a 3D model is tested for vertical and horizontal coordination, then the drawing sets are arranged to demonstrate how MEP-FP systems function in coordination as well as for more transparency, annotation and tagging process. The organizations who are liable to control MEP coordination can get elevation, section, and isometric views from the 3D model produced earlier. Besides, these can be applied for client explanations.

5. Formation of Detailed Service Drawings: In this stage, all the structural service-by-service drawings are generated and the details are included with reference to their dimensions like heights, and distances from gridlines. Site installation teams utilize these drawings and develop the base for fabrication drawings.

6. Formation of Spool, Fabrication Drawings, and Hangar Drawings: On basis of the scope of work, particular services drawings are utilized to generate fabrication drawings through some software or detailing. These drawings illustrate fabrication features for ductwork, and hence the CNC machines can directly identify them for rendering purposes.

If required, the MEP coordination unit also indicates the details of the model to create spooling data for production crews. Except for this, the firm can even plan out and then demonstrate the hangars for every design. As soon as the plan is made, the hangar specifications are provided on a list for the production units.

In MEP coordination systems, some steps may be omitted with regards to the scope of the project. Although each point is important for completing any project successfully devoid of any setbacks, additional cost, and unanticipated design amendments.

7. As-Fitted Modifications: This final step is associated with making modifications to the design model and the pictures because of some site changes from the construction designs. If the coordination work is perfect, and the installation is done according to the construction drawing directions and plans, the amendments to the as-fitted (also defined as as-installed and as-built) designs are least amount.

The newest blockchain solution will convert BIM into a collaborative and legally binding process in reality

Bimchain.io is planning to incorporate it’s distributed ledger technology (DLT), equivalent to that applied in Blockchain-based systems like the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, into BIM processes, tools, and data. It is still in beta testing phase.

The project is supported by Autodesk and the Plan Transition Numérique dans le Bâtiment, the French equivalent of the BIM Task Group in the UK, and a market-ready product is supposed to be introduced next year.

The objective is to develop a new collaborative process for fulfilling the gap among 3D digital modeling and the conventional and legally binding paper-based processes associated with project administration, building control, insurance and payment.

The purpose is to connect authenticated proofs of contributions to the 3D model with automated payments, a form of smart contract that ensures all stakeholders are dedicated to obtain the level of quality essential.

The primary goal is to produce a decentralized version of BIM, which rather than running in a central common data environment on a cloud platform run by a third party, is subjected to peer-to-peer data exchange with no one party capable of managing or claiming ownership of the data.

Benefits of blockchain in construction:

The project schedule turns to be hundreds of smart contracts in a Common Data Environment (CDE), perceptible to all project stakeholders.

Each smart contract contains a value.

Completion and authentication of a smart contract sets off an automatic payment from one wallet to another.

The project acquires its next ‘block’ of information that will make BIM model updated with accomplished work and project spend.

The role of BIM in prefabrication period

BIM is used to provide digital representation of the building process in 3D with the scope of a 4D (time) and 5D (cost) of data to minimize errors, enhance effectiveness and decision-making.

With improved perceptibility and clarity throughout a project to ensure that things remain on the schedule that’s been dedicated to and within the calculated budget being proposed, BIM tools provide substantial ROI for architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) professionals.

Besides, base-level geometry of a structure, BIM comprises of spatial relationships; mechanical, electric and plumbing (MEP) components and the quantities and cost estimates for the required building materials. If any modification is made, associated objects are updated along with it, all in a centralized model so that each team member of the project can get access of that model.

BIM produces a broad, digital picture of a project to facilitate the project stakeholders to have clear view concerning what resources are essential and when, as well as reduce the chances of over- or under-estimating the time and money the project will require.

The objective of prefab and modular methods is to lessen the time required to fabricate a structure on the jobsite, as well as integrate MEP components into the panel or module while fabrication is going on. BIM contains these components in the entire building model and makes trade-to-trade coordination better.

In prefab and modular construction, assembly requirements are altered since the piece, panel or module design is calibrated. As soon as the design gets ready, BIM can generate visual-based manuals, in place of written instructions so that the workers can get a clear idea of the new steps for fabrication.

Building in the virtual space is incorporating the new technologies like virtual and augmented reality.

Virtual reality can offer an immersive understanding of the BIM model and a supplementary resource for AEC professionals to examine the design options and find out design errors.

AR facilitates to layer BIM models with real objects in the jobsite as a reference point during the assembly process and avoids the construction errors.

How BIM was employed in San Francisco mega project to improve collaboration

A large-scale development project is going to be developed in Transbay area as part of a rezoning plan to support more density in the transport hub.

The project comprises of a 605-foot residential tower and a 910-foot hotel, condo and office tower — designers at London-based architectural firm Foster + Partners have settled to make a transition from 2D, CAD-based software to Autodesk’s 3D BIM Revit software.

It facilitates the architects to coordinate all design decisions which are undertaken through the software interface in a centralized location.

By employing the cloud-based Revit platform, project stakeholders will be able to avail the most updated information about the project and wide-ranging 3D visuals from any remote location, to allow evaluation of quality and make improved design details at the initial stage of the project life cycle.

BIM simplified the process for exchanging real-time feedback during the modeling process in coordinating the typical and complex “diagrid” cladding on the taller of the two towers.

3D modeling software is very helpful to make proper examinations concerning the design, the massing and the 3D articulation of the project.

The Architects, engineers and contractors utilize Revit to explore through various scenarios, make necessary modifications to any aspect of a building and make arrangement to reflect that change across the model in real time.

The modelling software allows the AEC communities to get access to entire project context and the most updated plans at any specified time and causes earlier decision-making and real-time collaboration to complete the project on schedule and sometimes earlier than schedule.

To reduce risk of structural or spatial conflicts with encompassing structures throughout construction, the designers modeled buildings on the perimeter apart from high-rise models, before breaking ground on the project.

In the same way, a clash detection feature in Autodesk’s Navisworks software facilitates the users to identify and rectify overlapping elements, interferences among moving objects and other design errors in a BIM model before construction. It significantly helps to reduce the constructability risk and the scope of costly rework later in the project timeline.

3D BIM models are “absolutely vital to contractors as they don’t have to get somebody searching for a set of 2D plans and trying to imagine situations and detect [issues].

There were 35 architects to be associated with the Ocean wide Center project, working to coordinate complicated structural components and fulfil design goals, client objectives and seismic requirements.

3D Repo introduced 3D Diff to detect clashes instantly among different types of models

3D Repo, the leading solution provider in Digital Construction technology, has recently introduced a software called 3D Diff solution that recognizes clashes in construction plans by examining the 3D models which were submitted by project partners and contractors.

3D Diff is considered as the first ever web based, real-time change detection software for 3D models which are frequently utilized in Building Information Modeling (BIM).

The improved 3D Diff solution with Clash Detection automatically detects and highlights intersections, and consequently prospective conflicts, among various types of models. From the inception phase of the architect’s plans, a range of disciplines, along with structural; environmental; mechanical, electrical and plumbing, and feasibly various others, will generate their own models. Each such model comprises of a range of 3D files with elementary metadata. Because, in several cases, each discipline functions with their own silos prior to occurrence of design review on a federation, clashes like pipework cutting via a solid steel structure may simply happen.

The cloud-based 3D Clash Detection offers a quick and consistent way to compare and contrast 3D models, from various disciplines, devoid of the file format or the software applied to form them. The 3D Diff with Clash Detection can function on different types of models in real time through an encrypted web browser.

The 3D Repo solution is also useful for the users to allocate visualizations, along with focusing on clashes, with project partners and stakeholders regardless of location or time-zone. These can then be exported as BCF (Building Collaboration Format) files to be distributed with authoring tools. The 3D Repo solution identifies and visualizes perfect intersection points wherever the clashes are found.

With the use of online 3D Clash Detection in combination with 3D Diff Change Detection technology, the models of any type and from any source are compared with the original designs, and with each other, making sure the clashes are identified at the initial state.

At the backend of the 3D Diff digital solution, there is 3D Repo’s award winning cloud based BIM platform that facilitates the users to access the latest 3D models through the web, and make real time modifications and informed decisions.
